Again DMR is at the front of the best fantasy novels in print。 Byron A。 Roberts stories are excellently written and features his unmistakable prose。 Each tale contains the essence of sword and sorcery。 Strong men and women battling unimageable horrors。 As I read this amazing book I was taken back to my youth and reading the Lancer Conan paperbacks and early David C。 Smith novels。 Roberts in no way copies their styles but recreates the power and atmosphere to draw the reader into his world。 I rec Again DMR is at the front of the best fantasy novels in print。 Byron A。 Roberts stories are excellently written and features his unmistakable prose。 Each tale contains the essence of sword and sorcery。 Strong men and women battling unimageable horrors。 As I read this amazing book I was taken back to my youth and reading the Lancer Conan paperbacks and early David C。 Smith novels。 Roberts in no way copies their styles but recreates the power and atmosphere to draw the reader into his world。 I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys grand adventure。 I hope we have not seen the last of Caylen-Tor。 。。。more

This was a joy, and all the great things I said about the first Caylen-Tor volume, The Chronicles of Caylen-Tor, apply here in equal measure。 At the outset Roberts lays out the correct reading order (which I assume is chronological) for the Caylen-Tor stories, and oddly enough stories from Volume I and II are not all in publication order (at least between these two volumes)。 This gives the second volume a feel that it's intended to fill in gaps from the first。 Strange approach, but still he does This was a joy, and all the great things I said about the first Caylen-Tor volume, The Chronicles of Caylen-Tor, apply here in equal measure。 At the outset Roberts lays out the correct reading order (which I assume is chronological) for the Caylen-Tor stories, and oddly enough stories from Volume I and II are not all in publication order (at least between these two volumes)。 This gives the second volume a feel that it's intended to fill in gaps from the first。 Strange approach, but still he does a good job setting up the context and timeframe for each story with a mini prelude and epilogue。The best of the Caylen-Tor stories weave in elements of ancient eldritch lore, lost civilizations and otherworldly horrors that cast a dark pall over settings and events。 Hence my favorite of the four stories here was the last, The Devil Beyond The Gate of Shadow, which sees a battle wearied Caylen seeking a shortcut home through a system of ancient underground dimensional portals。 However, the price of passage requires him to retrieve a powerful ancient relic that's fallen into the hands of an evil cabal of sorcerers bent on unleashing the dark, eldritch forces of the Chaosphere。This is great, riveting S&S stuff, and definitely a case where you can safely judge a book by its (heavily blood soaked) cover! 。。。more

When I first read The Chronicles of Caylen-Tor Volume I, I was wowed。 So much so that I went on to purchase a paperback copy。 Then I began to accumulate the various anthologies that Mr。 Roberts had been published in。 Roberts writes some rollicking good stuff。 Top shelf quality, but keep your dictionary handy。 I heard thru the grapevine that a second book was due in the coming months and I knew I had to read it。 Well here it is, with cool cover art by the talented Bebeto Daroz。 The painting depic When I first read The Chronicles of Caylen-Tor Volume I, I was wowed。 So much so that I went on to purchase a paperback copy。 Then I began to accumulate the various anthologies that Mr。 Roberts had been published in。 Roberts writes some rollicking good stuff。 Top shelf quality, but keep your dictionary handy。 I heard thru the grapevine that a second book was due in the coming months and I knew I had to read it。 Well here it is, with cool cover art by the talented Bebeto Daroz。 The painting depicts a scene from the second story, Carnage at the Crimson Stones。 Daroz has an impressive portfolio, check him out: ArtStation - Bebeto Daroz。With Volume II we get four new stories。 Each feature a snippet, at the beginning and end, detailing where this story fits and the events after the conclusion。 Plus at the end of the book are several appendices expounding relevant points in the history of this world。The Trial of Blood and Steel"When the lines of maps are redrawn during war, they are always etched in the blood of the fallen。"Caylen-Tor is traveling north。 He wishes nothing more than to return to his beloved homeland。 He becomes entangled in the conflict between some soldiers and the local nomads。 We get lots of bloody conflict and don't forget the monster scorpions! Great stuff。Carnage at the Crimson StonesA young woman has been abducted。 Caylen-Tor and his companions seek her safe return and the death of her captors。 An unexpected alliance, and a dark sacrifice round out the tale。 Bonds are forged。In the Hall of the Wolfborn LiegeA sedate tale of Caylen-Tor in his hall。 Drinking and the telling of tales and of deeds。 An unknown guest has his own tale to recount。 The Devil Beyond the Gate of ShadowSearching for a way home Caylen-Tor discovers an underground city of an ancient race。 He barters the strength of his sword arm to gain the magical assistance he needs to return home。 Something I cannot pinpoint made this story seem slightly different than the others。 Caylen-Tor also seemed to go along with events more easily than I would have expected given the circumstances。 And finally the villains he encounters were set up like bosses in a video game; defeat one, move on to the next。Conclusion:Get out there and support your indie publishers and authors。 Caylen-Tor stories are a so much fun; chocked full of all the good parts of sword and sorcery。 Makes for a pleasant distraction。 Will there be a Volume III? I hope so。 But then again, Roberts may wow us all with something new。Recommended! 。。。more
